What to put on the table instead of a tablet (a simple setup)
Empty tables lose to glowing rectangles. So we stopped leaving the table empty. We staged a tiny invitation that said: something good happens here.
The tablet wins on convenience. You win with a setup that’s equally convenient — and already waiting.

The five-object setup
- One printable page (not a stack that shouts “homework mountain”)
- One pencil + eraser
- A small tray or placemat that means “this is the spot”
- Optional: a timer they can see
- Optional: a cup of water — hospitality for little workers
Where the tablet goes
Out of arm’s reach and out of sight-line. Not as a threat — as a clear stage direction. The table is for paper right now.
Prep once, breathe often
Sunday clip of 5–7 pages beside the placemat. Future-you will send present-you a thank-you.
What page to choose when you’re exhausted
- Need calm fast? Colouring wind-down
- Need focus practice? Matching or maze
- Need skills gently? Trace + one thinking task — brain workout mix

Try tonight
- Clear a rectangle of table the size of an A4 page.
- Place page + pencil before anyone asks for a screen.
- Sit for 10–15 minutes with the setup — phones face down.
- Photo the finished page for your own heart; fridge optional.
