Why “just one more video” never ends — and what to swap instead
“One more” was our household myth — a tiny promise that behaved like a black hole. It wasn’t weak parenting. It was a product designed without an ending, negotiating with a human who was already tired.
Screens rarely offer a finish line. Printables do. That single difference changed our evenings.

The spiral, named kindly
- Autoplay queues the next novelty before satisfaction lands
- Each “okay, one more” teaches that boundaries are soft
- Turning it off feels like punishment, not completion
What to swap instead (the finishable thing)
A page with a clear end: the maze resolves, the row of letters is done, the colouring fills the shape. Completion is a feeling screens under-teach.
Try the announcement swap: “After this video, we do our page.” Then actually have the page waiting — table ready.
Wording that helped
“Videos don’t have an ending built in. Our page does. Let’s get that done-feeling.”
If you want less spiral long-term
Read screen time to zero without a fight and how much is too much. Shrink autoplay settings where you can — and grow the ritual that replaces the need.

Try tonight
- Turn off autoplay on the apps you use most.
- Pre-place tonight’s printable before any video starts.
- Keep the promise: after the agreed video, page time happens.
- Celebrate the end: ‘We got the done-feeling.’
